It was the heart of the rebellion of Skanderbeg, nicknamed “the Dragon of Albania” against the Ottoman Empire.
It has been the largest city of Southern Illyria at the time. Due to its dominating position over the Vjosa river, every movement through the valley and surrounding hills could be checked from Bylis city.
Amantia, founded around the middle of the 5th century BCE, was the historical capital of the ancient Greek tribe of the Amantes.
According to Neritan Ceca, Voutrotos (Butrint) was a flourishing city with a harbour, a theatre, and a sanctuary dedicated to the God of health Asclepius.
It was recognized as one of the most prominent cities at the time, selected from over twenty other cities throughout the Mediterranean, to receive Apollo’s glorious name, the god of music and poetry.
